00:00:02:11 - 00:00:27:24

Wayne Mulder

Welcome to the podcast this week on Morning Roll Call. The people agree violent crime might be a growing problem. The people of Los Angeles are actually helping the cops when it comes to meth. I guess if you can't beat them, join em. Little critters. They keep turning off the lights in one city in Texas. And finally, we end with Happy Columbus Day lessons we can learn from the great explorer who in 1492 sailed the ocean blue.

00:00:28:05 - 00:00:51:04

Wayne Mulder

And though those aren't lessons on how to enslave people and commit genocide, that would be CNN's version. And to be clear, we are against those things. Well, not just CNN. I mean, those other things we're against enslaving and committing genocide. But anyways, we'll let Christopher Columbus clear all that up in his own words. Morning Roll Call starts now.

00:00:53:28 - 00:01:16:04

Wayne Mulder

Welcome, everybody, to the 125th episode of the podcast. And this is your first time listening. If you would just do four things for me right now. Yep, right now. I'll wait. They're all easy. And lastly, enjoy the show. So this is Morning Roll Call. If you are not familiar with the format, this is just a quick monologue show.

00:02:00:24 - 00:02:18:03

Wayne Mulder

We're going to go over a couple of new stories and then I'm going to give you one important take away for the week. The other show is called The Interview Room. Completely different format. In the interview room, I sit down with a different guest every week. Last week I sat down with Shae Sparks. I've been getting a lot of great feedback on that episode.

00:02:18:13 - 00:02:36:13

Wayne Mulder

So if you haven't listened to it, there's really some good actionable advice in there that I know can make a difference in your life. So check that one out. Coming this week on Thursday at 0500 is my interview with Jasmine Peach from Australia. So you're going to enjoy that interview as well. So definitely be checking those out.

00:02:36:13 - 00:02:57:06

Wayne Mulder

And when you follow us on social media, you will get notified when those come out as well. All right. For three stories that you might have missed, I want to jump in to just a few things. I've been talking a lot about rising crime, but this story caught my eye right off the bat. Overwhelming majority sees violent crime as a major problem.

00:02:58:01 - 00:03:22:08

Wayne Mulder

Huh? Who would have known wed? Politico. Yeah. Politico. Morning Consult poll revealed that 77% of Americans saw violent crime as a major problem, while a further 17% saw it as a minor problem. Only 2% did not see violent crime as an issue. You know, what I always find interesting about these polls is who are those people in that last column?

00:03:22:08 - 00:03:41:29

Wayne Mulder

You know, the ones that, you know, half of them are like, yeah. Or two thirds are like, yes. And you know, the other two thirds like no. And then there's this always the small percentage that's like, you know, I don't know. It's a poll. It it most polls say yes, no, undecided. I don't know. I'm always confused on who those people are.

00:03:42:00 - 00:04:14:08

Wayne Mulder

But anyway, according to the 2021 crime numbers, there's been an increase in murders nationwide. There's been another article that I'm not going to go into today that actually is saying that a lot of these numbers haven't even been released by like 40% of agencies in the U.S. So who knows? But I do find it interesting that this article goes on to say that this really is nationwide, that violent crime is definitely shaping a lot of the critical races in the upcoming election.

00:04:14:08 - 00:04:33:18

Wayne Mulder

So I'll be curious, see how that plays out. But I thought that was interesting. Just given some of the stats that we've gone over in recent weeks, I wanted to bring that to you. The second story for this week, if you haven't seen it, is Los Angeles residents offer new cops huge rent subsidy. So I think this is a good thing.

00:04:33:27 - 00:05:01:05

Wayne Mulder

It's kind of interesting. So the money is actually coming from the citizens themselves. It's not coming from the agency. And it pretty much is over two years, about $2,000 a month that it helps to offset the cost of rent, which of course, in Los Angeles is shocking. It's not that shocking if you live in, say, Florida, probably, I'd guess Texas to be about the same because our rents have shot through the roof.

00:05:01:05 - 00:05:26:08

Wayne Mulder

And so they're saying that it's a median rent of over at 20 $200, which really for Florida, it's we're not quite there for the median rent yet, but we definitely are headed there if something doesn't change drastically soon. But this is a good step. And so the money is not coming out of the LAPD budget, but from private donations to the Los Angeles Police Foundation, meaning the residents are now wanting to get the cops back.

00:05:26:09 - 00:05:43:20

Wayne Mulder

I guess we're not going to defund them anymore. We're going to start funding them. So that's that's good. And overall, the goal is eventually to get the real estate community on board to help make affordable housing for those that join the agency. So I don't know how many listeners I have that want to go to Los Angeles. However, if you do, that's a great program.

00:05:43:20 - 00:06:08:07

Wayne Mulder

But honestly, that's the kind of program we're going to need in a lot of these city centers as these rates keep going up. And we're not going to be able to get affordable housing in the areas where people are serving, especially given the overall rate for law enforcement pay and salaries in the nation. So it's something to consider and it's definitely the right step going the right direction and may be something we need to see in other parts of the country.

00:06:09:06 - 00:06:36:21

Wayne Mulder

The third story I wanted to bring you this week, high life organ dem governor candidate want safe havens for meth users. So not everything she was saying in the beginning was wrong. However, she essentially wants to make it okay. That decriminalize is. MATTHEWS And I know there's differing opinions on this. If you listen to I recently had a podcast guest on where we discussed this very thing.

00:06:36:21 - 00:07:01:12

Wayne Mulder

If you go back to the Darren Hill podcast and we talk more from a libertarian stance on when it comes to drug criminalization and whether or not we kind of go down that road with prohibition and whether or not prohibiting the alcohol is what kind of caused the crime spike, which obviously is an argument. And then what that looks like when it comes to things like hard drugs and balancing that.

00:07:01:15 - 00:07:21:09

Wayne Mulder

I just had this conversation with someone in my office the other day just and balancing that with the public safety and civil society and the ability to, you know, be walk your kids to the local store and not, you know, have someone overdosing next to you, you know. So there's all these things that have to be in balance.

00:07:21:09 - 00:07:37:25

Wayne Mulder

Right? And I do think that if you can get people help and if you can get them off of the drugs, that is always the goal. Now, is that always possible? Does that mean we don't have a criminal element to it? I don't agree with that. I do I do believe it is a crime, but that's my personal opinion.

00:07:37:25 - 00:08:03:21

Wayne Mulder

And everyone is entitled to an opinion, at least in my opinion. So Portland's first meth stabilization center was a failure, but that's what she wants, is she wants to create more of them. It does go on to say that these statements could make it challenging for her to win, because during her tenure as House speaker, she approved a sweeping drug decriminalization bill and sided with rioters over law enforcement.

00:08:03:21 - 00:08:24:21

Wayne Mulder

During the protests. So they're not so sure this is going to work out. Well, for one thing that stood out to me that was kind of interesting is that methamphetamine has killed more or go organic. What do you people from Oregon call yourselves or Guineans interesting anyway has killed more people from Oregon than fentanyl or heroin in the last three years.

00:08:24:21 - 00:08:43:13

Wayne Mulder

And I find that fascinating because honestly, if I had to guess, I would have guessed fentanyl all day long. But interesting article. Remember all the articles you can go down to the show notes or go to the show notes page and on the blue line dot com and on there, I've got the complete links to them, plus a lot more details.

00:08:43:13 - 00:09:08:13

Wayne Mulder

So check those out. If a story that I go over interest you, that is all I have for the three stories for this week. All right. So one crazy thing that I want to give you for this week is kind of a funny, not funny story. Police in Texas put a furry bandit into custody for allegedly causing two citywide power outages in a span of three days.

00:09:08:22 - 00:09:28:01

Wayne Mulder

Now, of course, that's what they put out on Twitter. That's not exactly what happened. We'll get to that. If you have any young kids, you may not want wanted to hear this part of it because it may traumatize them. Anyway, a raccoon found its way into the electrical grids substation in a small town in Texas on Saturday night and caused a citywide power outage.

00:09:29:07 - 00:09:58:11

Wayne Mulder

That, in and of itself is nothing really super surprising, right like that. That could easily happen. A critter gets in there and we lose power. So the power was restored by early Sunday morning, but it was knocked out again on Monday evening. Initially, they were claiming by the same raccoon and they posted the police posted a press release on Facebook announcing that the suspect had been taken into custody and included a photograph of the masked marauder, whom they dubbed Ricky Raccoon.

00:09:58:25 - 00:10:22:25

Wayne Mulder

They went on to talk about the incident that happened that I just told you about and that essentially the little critter made its way into the substation transformer and knocked out the lights. Now, I will have to say, if it is like 80 degrees or more and there is no electricity and the air conditioner is not running, the critters got to go like like critters got to stop, you know, killing air conditioning.

00:10:23:01 - 00:10:43:01

Wayne Mulder

That's probably not something that's going to end well for the critter, ironically, or as you might expect, it did it it wasn't the same raccoon. It was as you expected. Essentially, they shorted out the system. And when they shorted out the system, they also shorted their lives. And the little critters did not make it. And it was two separate critters.

00:10:43:10 - 00:11:06:28

Wayne Mulder

And they have since found a way to hopefully block them from continuing to shut the lights out in that small town in Texas. That's all I have for this week's one crazy thing. So for the last section, it's the one important takeaway. So the one important takeaway is what can Christopher Columbus teach us about perseverance and reliance on someone greater than ourselves?

00:11:08:00 - 00:11:29:22

Wayne Mulder

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've been hearing ever since the whole statue destruction thing started, this whole big push towards obviously Christopher Columbus has to be a bad guy, right? He was a genocidal maniac and he enslaved all these people. I'm not going to get into the history of Christopher Columbus. First of all, it would take me longer than what this little segment is supposed to be.

00:11:29:22 - 00:11:47:27

Wayne Mulder

And second of all, there are some really great places to refer you to. So go to the show notes. And there's a Prager U video by Michael Knowles that is 5 minutes long, really well done. And just kind of gives you an overview of a lot of the things that are said about Christopher Columbus and the truth, which would be a good thing to do on Christopher Columbus Day.

00:11:48:06 - 00:12:09:25

Wayne Mulder

And then another one is by David Barton, the renowned historian, very, very interesting guy to listen and follow. I love watching his videos, but he's got a video out. I have a link in the show notes. It's called The Truth about Christopher Columbus. And in both of those, they talk about the natives. He actually encountered the different tribes, the one tribe that thought eating small babies was a good idea.

00:12:10:10 - 00:12:29:06

Wayne Mulder

I don't know. I kind of frown on that myself. I could see why most normal people would, but I guess in this day and age, we don't frown on that anymore. So people that were eating that little fry baby is a good thing. And the guy that stopped him was the bad guy. I don't know. We live in an upside down world, however.

00:12:29:06 - 00:12:48:06

Wayne Mulder

Not my point. What I really like about Christopher Columbus is I read an article and this is coming to us from the American Heritage Society, and they say they're trying to explain who he was. Right. What kind of guy was Christopher Columbus? And they said he was rather contained, inflexible and high minded. Well, those aren't necessarily positive things.

00:12:48:06 - 00:13:29:02

Wayne Mulder

Right. But they go on, say he was also capable of ruthlessness and extreme cruelty because he was someone who traveled the high seas. And absolutely, when these villagers were going after the other villagers, they were cannibals. And so forth. Absolutely. He was capable of ruthlessness, but he was also imaginative and intrepid. There could be no doubt. And although he proved a weak and fumbling administrator, we do get a sense of his magnetic personality, talks about how he was able to wed a woman who was by far his social superior and he won the compassionate support of Queen Isabella for an enterprise that was decidedly risky, which, of course, we all famously know about.

00:13:29:10 - 00:13:53:16

Wayne Mulder

And like all these held up a heroic stature. He had that admirable, admirable mix of courage, single minded mindedness and zeal that saw him through overwhelming obstacles because he was human. You can't first of all, you can't judge history through a lens from today. That's first problem. Second of all, you can't take the human side out of it where people are.

00:13:54:03 - 00:14:11:15

Wayne Mulder

They have a sinful nature. They are broken. They are just like all of us. That is indicative of all of us. And then the lesson is overcoming that. And then there are the other thing that was key to his character was his intense religiosity. And that's kind of what I want to talk about, among a few other things.

00:14:11:22 - 00:14:33:29

Wayne Mulder

So there is coming from his excerpts that he wrote in a luminous copy of The Book of Prophecies is a famous thing called apologia. And in there and I'm not going to read this whole thing to you, so don't turn the channel yet. I'm just going to read a couple of highlights to you. But he said at a very early age, I went to the sea and have continued navigating until today.

00:14:34:16 - 00:14:52:00

Wayne Mulder

The art of sailing is favorable for anyone who wants to pursue knowledge of this world secrets. I have already been at this business for 40 years. Then he goes on to who he's dealt with and the conversations he's had with different people. I found our Lord very well-disposed toward this. My desire, and he gave me a spirit for it.

00:14:52:08 - 00:15:16:10

Wayne Mulder

He prospered me and seamanship and supplied me with the necessary tools. And he goes on to talk about astronomy, astronomy, geometry, arithmetic, and all these different components. And he credited God with being the one that kind of led him to the skill set that would eventually allow him to sail across the oceans and to end up in what we modern day, what we know as the Bahamas.

00:15:17:12 - 00:15:44:26

Wayne Mulder

So he talks about petitioning for seven years, trying to get somebody behind this voyage. All those who heard my enterprise rejected it with laughter, scoffing at me. And then he goes on to say, When things finally turned, who doubts that this illumination was from the Holy Spirit? I attest that he, with marvelous rays of light, consoled me through the Holy and Sacred Sacred Scriptures, a strong and clear testimony.

00:15:45:02 - 00:16:02:16

Wayne Mulder

Then he goes on to describe the Bible. Our Lord wish to perform the clearest work of Providence in this matter the voyage to the Indies to console me and others in this matter of the Holy Temple. I have spent seven years in the Royal Court arguing the case with many a persons of such authority and learned in all of the arts.

00:16:02:16 - 00:16:31:13

Wayne Mulder

And in the end they concluded that all was idle nonsense, and that with this they gave up the enterprise. Yet the outcome was to be the fulfillment of what our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, said beforehand and through the mouths of prophets. And so the prophecy has been made manifest. He believes strongly in the providential perspective of American history, which is a correct perspective of American history, a view that asserts that the directing hand of Almighty God through the publication link goes on to talk about his book of prophecies.

00:16:31:26 - 00:17:07:01

Wayne Mulder

But that is a powerful thing, right? So I want to leave you with three ideas, because when we think about the story of Christopher Columbus, a couple of things stood out to me. One of it was he always believed the hand of the Almighty God was guiding him and helped him to remain focused. And that's a take away that regardless of your belief system, whether you believe in God or you believe in a great spirit or a different power or whatever your belief system is oftentimes we believe that we're here for a calling or if you're in law enforcement, that you came to it for a life of service, that someone or something is directing

00:17:07:01 - 00:17:30:04

Wayne Mulder

you into what you're doing today. And it leads toward stronger family, stronger community, stronger commitment, all these things that are very important to us. And so one of the takeaways that we can learn from Christopher Columbus is having that faith and that belief that the hand of the Almighty was guiding him. Another thing is he was thankful for the abilities that he knew he was given to fulfill his calling.

00:17:30:13 - 00:17:59:01

Wayne Mulder

When he talks about being good at the skill set that allowed him to be a master navigator of the oceans and to become the Admiral Sea Admiral that he became that skill set he believed to have been endowed, to given to him by the very creator of the universe. And he then looks at it as you read his writings in such a way that since God gave me the skills, he expected me to use these skills to do what I did and to find this other world, this new world.

00:17:59:09 - 00:18:22:09

Wayne Mulder

And so that was a very important part of who he was. And he wasn't a perfect man by any stretch of the imagination, but he was somebody who believed that the divine providence would lead him to these things. And then lastly, he spent years trying to get someone to buy into his vision, but he never gave up. And I think that's one of the more important lessons that we can learn from him.

00:18:22:16 - 00:18:48:26

Wayne Mulder

Right. You go and he petitions one king or one kingdom, and they're like, no, absolutely not. He goes, talks of sparing no. They say no. And originally he keeps trying to. Seven years goes by. Eventually he he finds someone who's going to fund this mission and allow him to do these things. But it only came to fruition because of that tenacity, that dogged tenacity, where he's like, no, I have this feeling that this is what I'm supposed to do.

00:18:50:00 - 00:19:05:09

Wayne Mulder

So what is it for you? What is that thing that you feel you're supposed to do? What is that thing you keep saying you want to do in your life? What is that thing that you've been wanting to do with your family? Or maybe it's starting a business? I always talk about that because that's my thing, right? I want to start a business.

00:19:05:09 - 00:19:30:01

Wayne Mulder

That's what this is. But maybe that's not your thing. Maybe your thing is, well, I want to spend more time with X. Maybe it's family. Maybe it's extended family. Maybe it's working on strengthening those relationships with friends. Maybe it's also all manner of things that it can be. But in the end, what happens so often is anymore, we lose that grand vision.

00:19:30:03 - 00:20:08:19

Wayne Mulder

We lose that eyesight, that ability to see what we're trying to get to. And instead we give up where we don't stick in anything for 7 minutes, let alone seven years. And I think that's a good lesson that we can learn from someone like Christopher Columbus, who rightly has been credited. When I was a kid, you grew up hearing about the great things and every kid could name the three ships and they and name the little silly quote that in 1492, he sailed the ocean blue because he is an important figure from American history and an important figure in understand the providential beginnings of this great nation.

00:20:08:20 - 00:20:32:05

Wayne Mulder

So happy Columbus Day to you. That's this week's one important takeaway. All right, everybody, I hope you enjoyed this week's show. Remember to leave us a rating and review, if you would, on whatever your favorite platform is. Five stars. That would be the appropriate number of stars in the comments on iTunes makes a huge difference. I guess it's Apple Podcasts now makes a huge difference, so I would greatly appreciate it if you would do that.

00:20:32:20 - 00:20:57:01

Wayne Mulder

The two reviews I want to highlight this week is, first of all coming to us from Laurie. Such important info here. Thanks, Shay and Wayne. I call them ants. Automatic negative thoughts. Get them under control or they will eat you alive. She is so correct. That's great advice and it looks like she's got a great side. I checked out her YouTube channel as well, so be sure to do that and she's referring to the recent Interview Room podcast with Shay.

00:20:57:07 - 00:21:20:16

Wayne Mulder

So if you haven't watched that one, check that out. And then the other one this week is Walter. And he says, Good episode, thanks versus Sink. I like that about you, Walter. So thank you, everybody, for commenting and for watching the podcast on YouTube. That's huge. I am trying to build that channel out. So if that is your preferred format, be sure to subscribe on there.

00:21:20:24 - 00:21:41:18

Wayne Mulder

Hit that notification bell and please like each episode as you watch them. Because all that helps with algorithms no matter which one you're on. That does it for this week's Morning Roll Call. I will see you Thursday in the interview room. But in the meantime, I'm going to see you out there on the blue line.
