00:00:09:04 - 00:00:33:17

Wayne Mulder

Welcome, my friend, to the On the Blue Line podcast for law enforcement. And I am your host Wayne Mulder. This is the podcast where we help law enforcement overcome the mental health toll, the profession to become better leaders and protectors on and off the job. In today's 105th episode of Morning Roll Call, Hurricane Idalia, you update a review of some police tactics why we must join or die and the passing of a musical icon.

00:00:33:19 - 00:00:37:00

Wayne Mulder

Morning Roll Call starts now.

00:00:37:03 - 00:00:42:27

Because we're going to go down the seasons. No, when.

00:00:43:03 - 00:00:52:29

Wayne Mulder

You break the law, if you decide to do this, we're going to hold you responsible. You are the only good thing. It's someone's worst day. That is a privilege for a police officer.

00:00:52:29 - 00:00:58:12

At the very least, you could honor the sacrifices of police officers and their families.

00:00:58:18 - 00:01:32:12

Wayne Mulder

We have the ability to save the Republic. Okay. So welcome. I hope you have a good week. It it was a very interesting weekend when I sat down to make this podcast. So it may seem a little weird to you because I'm absolutely flabbergasted, but that's okay. Let's start with the important stuff. So do you follow us on Twitter or if not on the blue line and the number one on the blue line and the number one by far I'm the most active on there.

00:01:32:12 - 00:01:52:07

Wayne Mulder

That's where you want to go. But you can follow set on the Blue Line podcast on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Rumble, and yes, even the Chinese Communist Tick tock. Be sure to leave us a reading or review wherever you watch that helps. Five stars huge help subscribe all those things. They seem simple, but if you haven't done them, they do help out.

00:01:52:07 - 00:02:13:20

Wayne Mulder

So please do that. That's how all this stuff is tracked besides actually listening and watching the episode. So I appreciate it and always know that the all these episodes are done in video as well. So if you'd prefer, in fact they're kind of formatted for that. So you do miss some things. Just listening to the audio, they're all on YouTube and Rumble, whichever you would prefer to watch it on Feedback.

00:02:13:22 - 00:02:33:17

Wayne Mulder

We'd love to hear from you, the listener feedback at on the blue line dot com and just know that this is one format of the podcast. We do an interview room on Thursdays and actually that's the story I want to start with is her king idea came this last weekend hit the state of Florida. It was a very busy week as is always the case when it's nearing it.

00:02:33:19 - 00:02:58:29

Wayne Mulder

We go to something called an Alpha Bravo schedule. For those of you not in law enforcement, the military, essentially everybody works 12 on, 12 off until things are resolved. So it's a typical every day, pretty much you have the entire agency working. Fortunately, in this particular area, there was some coastal flooding and that kind of thing, but no serious, major widespread damage here.

00:02:59:02 - 00:03:16:15

Wayne Mulder

Now, obviously, that's different further north in the state where it struck. And our thoughts are out with the first responders and those that were impacted by the hurricane in that part of the state. It's also why there was no interview room podcast this last week. As many of you know, it's a very small thing that I'm doing here.

00:03:16:15 - 00:03:35:24

Wayne Mulder

And for right now I do the majority of it, making it very difficult to get out episodes when I am also not here and doing what my real job is, which is in this career that we're often talking about. So this week I was going to just talk about this idea of unity, which I'm still going to do, and we'll get to that here in a minute.

00:03:35:26 - 00:03:55:15

Wayne Mulder

But I first wanted to talk about a couple of videos. So Saturday was a very interesting day in the Twittersphere. Now I get that the Twitter sphere is not the real world, so I fully understand that ex Twitter, whatever you want to call it, I get that that's not the real world. However, I don't have a very large following.

00:03:55:15 - 00:04:21:09

Wayne Mulder

So most of the feedback and kickback and so forth that I get into conversations are with a small group of people that either a follow me and or know me personally or there's some sort of connection there, or they're in law enforcement of the retired law enforcement. It's not like I have 100,000 followers right now. So it's really odd when I get extreme kickback from essentially trolling in just other craziness.

00:04:21:09 - 00:04:47:04

Wayne Mulder

So I want to look at this video. The first story I want to talk about and I really want to look at these two videos from a police tactic standpoint. It's not something I typically do, but here's what happens, right? So don't it? Operator has a huge following big YouTube channel. It does all sorts of things now, but he put out a video of this action that happened in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and he stated, Police in New Brunswick, New Jersey, confront a man with a machete.

00:04:47:04 - 00:05:06:03

Wayne Mulder

The officer turns his head for a split second. And that's all the time it takes for the armed man to be on top of them. Shots were fired and the suspect is reportedly in stable condition. All right. I agree. It's definitely a complacency issue. Right. So then I respond and here's what I write. Complacency absolutely kills, but so does bad tactics.

00:05:06:06 - 00:05:31:04

Wayne Mulder

Do they not have read Guns Less Lethal in New Jersey, something that could reach out and touch this guy and not require everyone in such close proximity? Thankfully, it looks like all officers involved are okay. Be safe out there. That's all I said. What's bizarre to me is that you're right. I didn't go down the road of explaining all the things that should already be obvious.

00:05:31:06 - 00:05:54:12

Wayne Mulder

So I didn't explain that the lethal component of this bad guy with Machete, you're definitely at lethal force. No issue there whatsoever. That kind of goes without saying. Very ironic when when you watch this video, you've got like eight guys standing here with lethal force. That doesn't really seem to be the point of either what I said or what don't it operator said.

00:05:54:19 - 00:06:23:03

Wayne Mulder

But here, let's watch the video first so you can see what I'm seeing and we'll go from there. Oh, yes, yes. Oh, shoot. So clearly someone has a cell phone camera here and they're showing all these officers. So stop. You've got all these officers here, all at low ready holding the gun or holding their guns. No problem. I don't have an issue with that.

00:06:23:05 - 00:06:45:14

Wayne Mulder

And then we come back to so we got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven officers on scene. And then this guy turns his head and that's when the guy with the machete comes after him. Now we're going to slow the video down and you look at it, you'll see the taser was also deployed. So one of the guys has a less lethal option.

00:06:45:14 - 00:07:06:15

Wayne Mulder

It's a taser, but they're so far away from the guy, They're at the far reaches of what the taser is going to do. So let me preface all this by saying something very obvious. But again, clearly the obvious is missing with half the people that look at things. So this is not a question of whether or not we were at a lethal force.

00:07:06:18 - 00:07:31:03

Wayne Mulder

The other thing is, as you have so many people, they're just standing there at low ready with lethal options. But why are we there now? I don't know what predates this. What predicated it what started before this? I don't know any of that. And so, in fairness, maybe there's a reason that we ended up in this situation, which you always have to give the benefit of the doubt to anybody when you're watching a video like this.

00:07:31:03 - 00:07:51:18

Wayne Mulder

Because unless you actually were there or unless you've seen it from multiple standpoints, I don't know what happened right before this. Maybe that's why we all moved in and that's why this is happening. Right. So, again, I'm not going to write all this in some sort of qualifier in a tweet. That's just not the way any of this works.

00:07:51:20 - 00:08:12:00

Wayne Mulder

But what people who are coming back at me with is saying that they don't understand that, why, you know, we're pretty much a lethal force and nothing else should be on the table in that I wholeheartedly disagree with. When you watch this video. Listen, the minute the guy charges out of a machete, it's on. I get that all day long.

00:08:12:00 - 00:08:35:02

Wayne Mulder

But why weren't there any other options? Why it why don't we have I've seen personally the beanbag rounds work in these type of situations, but that doesn't mean it's the only thing. And what really cracks me up is the same people that are pushing back at me because they were like, He has the machete, just kill him are the same ones that don't seem to be pointing out the complacency part of what started this entire thing.

00:08:35:04 - 00:09:04:09

Wayne Mulder

So I responded to a few different people and I did point out that I hate social media and that this post reminded me of how much I hate social media. But I made very clear that the lethal coverage isn't the issue. The issue is, is that more than one thing can be true at once, right? Why does this why is this an either or scenario when it comes to all the responses that I received, Why is the only option lethal force?

00:09:04:09 - 00:09:23:29

Wayne Mulder

And if that is the only option? Right. So let's slow down and let's look at this from a couple different ways to look at it. Right. So I have no wish you guys got a machete. You're got lethal force. So you show up on the scene, guy's got machete, You stop the threat all day long, what happens, happens.

00:09:24:04 - 00:09:50:01

Wayne Mulder

His actions justified. Your response? You're good. No, no problem. Not in no way am I judging that. But what I have here is you've got seven officers on scene and you've got them complacent, which is what led to this entire thing. They're looking around, they're discussing they're looking the 21 foot rule still exist. And the fact that none of them were paying half of them weren't paying attention doesn't negate that.

00:09:50:01 - 00:10:15:04

Wayne Mulder

Right. But my point is, is why don't you set up with multiple lethal coverage, less lethal coverage? Why don't you consider you got a fence here? Why don't you consider some sort of blockade and I get that with these fences. Maybe there is no way to get someone behind him. Something that we've been very successful with when it comes to Tasers is trying to get somebody to sneak up behind the individual with the knife, because then you have the whole back, as you guys know.

00:10:15:04 - 00:10:38:12

Wayne Mulder

So that's going to get you what you need with the taser to take him down. I will say I've seen the taser fail miserably. Years ago, I was on the scene when we were testing a non Taser brand taser or electro device. And I've seen them go to fire in the actual head of it. Not not the probes, the actual head of it, just like pop off and fall on the ground in front of everybody.

00:10:38:14 - 00:11:07:12

Wayne Mulder

The good news is, is it created enough shock for everybody, including the bad guy, that we were able to take him down. But I've seen it completely not work. So that's why you have lethal coverage. But that goes without saying. That's not what any of this has to do with the question here is the complacency and why isn't there some sort of direction here instead of having people just standing around holding their I guess, will say they're holding their weapons?

00:11:07:15 - 00:11:28:04

Wayne Mulder

Completely bizarre to me. And the response is completely bizarre to me. So from a tactical perspective, listen, I'm not a big tactics guy. I've been very honest about that since I started this podcast. I don't have one of these shows where I talk about more existential things. I talk about the government, I talk about politics, I talk about all sorts of things that interest me a whole hell of a lot more than tactics.

00:11:28:04 - 00:11:52:05

Wayne Mulder

I was never in the military. I'm not a SWAT guy. I you know, I would be much more inclined to read than be a SWAT operator. Nothing against my SWAT operator brothers. But the problem is, is it two things can be true at once, right? And this is from a armchair quarterback perspective, just looks bad, looks sloppy, but maybe it's the best that could happen.

00:11:52:05 - 00:12:10:15

Wayne Mulder

I don't know how much time is going on here. The video doesn't give you that. And I always give the fairness to the officers because in no way am I ever going to judge a seeing, even if I'm reviewing BWC video, in no way am I going to judge that scene without physically being there. But the opposite is true as well.

00:12:10:15 - 00:12:34:27

Wayne Mulder

We can learn from it. So in the same way that donut operator was pointing out that, hey, maybe complacency here could lead to these officers getting injured, maybe not looking at other tools at your disposal, backing up a little bit and creating that buffer so you're not within the 21 foot paying attention. Those with lethal coverage actually being on all the above could have kept these guys safer.

00:12:34:27 - 00:12:57:03

Wayne Mulder

Now, fortunately, it looks like they all were safe in the end. So that's that's wonderful, thank God. But I just think it's an important reminder and it's something that just seemed to get so much traction to the negative. And so, again, let me be very clear. I don't know what all happened here. The officers probably made the best decision they had for where they were at.

00:12:57:05 - 00:13:19:27

Wayne Mulder

As with all agencies, they'll be looking at other tools for less lethal. So you can have both lethal coverage and less lethal coverage. And if you have the option to use less lethal and you can stop the threat while simultaneously keeping everybody safe and throwing them into jail where they belong or into a mental health institution, depending on what was going on prior to this.

00:13:20:00 - 00:13:43:01

Wayne Mulder

Then that's a win. And that keeps you out of really ugly cases like the second one I want to look at. So this tragic incident happened in Ohio, and I'm sure you've seen it all over. The news is starting to get more traction and obvious. And here's here's the irritating thing to me, right? Like there are several several things about this one.

00:13:43:01 - 00:13:46:00

Wayne Mulder

So let's first watch what occurred here.

00:13:46:03 - 00:13:48:29

1328 get out of the car.

00:13:49:01 - 00:14:01:17

Wayne Mulder

And then get out now. So this is the actual body camera footage from the officers reports so far, So far.

00:14:01:19 - 00:14:05:01

Car stop, stop, stop.

00:14:05:03 - 00:14:11:28

Car has.

00:14:12:00 - 00:14:34:17

Wayne Mulder

Stopped. Hey, Out of the car. Out of the car. Out of the car. Out of the car. Coming out of the car. Wash out of the car. They said you're so safe. Do not leave. Get out of the car then. Then get out now. Then get out. Get out of the car.

00:14:34:19 - 00:14:38:26

Get the call.

00:14:38:29 - 00:15:06:18

Wayne Mulder

Shots fired. So, listen, this is a tragic situation here that occurred. Again, the I tweeted about this. And again, it was one of the top operators videos, but I wrote he had questions. He had a question mark. Is it lawful, lawful and lawful? And I said, couldn't be better said. Right. So essentially the news story is this tie to IKEA Young, a 21 year old pregnant black woman.

00:15:06:18 - 00:15:22:12

Wayne Mulder

She was at the store. These officers were already there on an unrelated call and a store employee approached them and said that she had allegedly stolen several items. She was sitting in her parked car. And as you see in the video there, they run over and they're like, hey, get out of the vehicle. You need exit the vehicle.

00:15:22:12 - 00:15:40:17

Wayne Mulder

And she's like, For what? And meanwhile, the other officer gets in front of the vehicle. More on that in a minute. The video then showed Young slowly accelerate forward towards the officer who was standing in front of her car. He yelled at her to stop before firing a single shot that struck her. And that is, of course, what led to her death.

00:15:40:24 - 00:16:00:03

Wayne Mulder

And obviously, they're starting to be outraged and stuff. One of the irritating things this comes from the Hill, but they said she was an unarmed pregnant mother of two and yet, obviously she was armed with a vehicle that could clearly kill somebody. So there is that. So saying she was unarmed is not entirely true, though, how they mean it.

00:16:00:05 - 00:16:18:14

Wayne Mulder

But I actually responded on this a couple of days ago and then they released the video. So start getting more traction online. But I wrote this is a tragedy for all involved. Right. Because multiple things can be true at once. So first of all, officers should avoid standing in front of cars that can go mobile. It drives me crazy.

00:16:18:18 - 00:16:34:24

Wayne Mulder

It may not be wrong, but bad tactics. The common exalt Leo cases are often avoidable. What do I mean by that? Right? So this is the kind of thing that drives me nuts. And I hear it all the time with pursuits. It's like, Well, what are the charges against Leo? Well, what do you mean, agg assault? Leo, What happened?

00:16:34:24 - 00:16:58:10

Wayne Mulder

Well, I was standing alongside the vehicle conducting a traffic stop and they drove away. What were they trying to hit you or were they trying to get away? There are very few, very few acceptable situations where standing in front of a vehicle that can go mobile is what you should be doing. It's usually just a bad idea. There's other tools at your disposal, Right?

00:16:58:13 - 00:17:16:17

Wayne Mulder

So again, this was shoplifting. Again, when people need to be held accountable. More on that in a minute. But what about putting stop sticks under the tires? What about boxing around in with your vehicle? What about I mean, there's some other tools other than you standing physically in front of the vehicle and creating a shoot don't shoot scenario.

00:17:16:17 - 00:17:36:17

Wayne Mulder

Like I just don't get it. So then the second thing I said is committing a crime. Any crime may lead to an interaction with law enforcement that if you don't comply in and of itself is an escalation of all events that follow. Right? So that's true with both of these stories. It should already maybe it's because we're just such a fallen country that these things just aren't intuitively known.

00:17:36:17 - 00:17:56:20

Wayne Mulder

So that when I make these statements that people those are the things they bring up. But yes, let's be extremely clear, right? You are responsible for your individual actions. So if your actions, you go into a place and you steal something and then you end up in an interaction with law enforcement, whose fault is it? Well, of course it's yours.

00:17:56:22 - 00:18:18:14

Wayne Mulder

You went in there and you stole something. You're standing there with a machete. It's your fault that that the beginning of the whole situation, the escalation of it, is when people refuse to comply with a lawful order. But that goes without saying. That's not what I'm looking at in either of these situations. What I'm looking at is things that can make you and I better.

00:18:18:17 - 00:18:38:10

Wayne Mulder

What are the tactic tactics that can make you and I better at doing this job? That's what I'm looking at. So then committing a crime, any crime may lead to that interaction and can be an escalation, right? So you cannot blame law enforcement for a tragic outcome when you violate these principles and commit crimes and then fail to comply.

00:18:38:12 - 00:18:58:00

Wayne Mulder

Like that's not a thing. Right? You don't get to then say, well, it's law enforcement's fault. Well, it's not because you wish you were part of the situation as well. And that's the real point, right? These officers will never be the same. This is a difficult situation they were placed in and it will affect them for the rest of their lives.

00:18:58:03 - 00:19:34:16

Wayne Mulder

That officer that had to use deadly force, whether he may whether he made a dumb decision to stay in front of that vehicle or not, he will live with this internally the rest of his natural life, which is exactly why I talk about these things, because if, Lord forbid, the guy with the machete would have injured that officer in this case to be able to avoid being through something like this and having your name dragged through the news, isn't it worth it if we can learn from this and not put ourselves in these situations?

00:19:34:18 - 00:19:58:13

Wayne Mulder

Now, listen, sometimes you have no choice. Sometimes it's a really bad guy behind that wheel and you've just got to take that. You just got to work. It is what it is. I understand that. And quite frankly, you would think most people would understand that. But I understand that's not times we're in. So then lastly, I say releasing the name of the officer and allowing the mob to form and influence the decisions of this tragedy is completely unacceptable.

00:19:58:15 - 00:20:24:27

Wayne Mulder

So for all of you out there who are making these snide comments acting like somehow I'm against the use of legal lethal force, or that somehow I'm bemoaning or degrading or standing against law enforcement, it's absolute foolishness. In fact, I 100% am trying to avoid what these officers are going to end up going through. Not the first guy, but this guy, because the mob is going to form in these people.

00:20:24:27 - 00:20:45:13

Wayne Mulder

As we've seen in other areas, there's going to be a huge question of justice at some point here. So in both of these situations, the takeaway what I want you to think about is when it comes to tactics, we can all improve, we can all get better. There's guys that I worked with who are far superior to my abilities.

00:20:45:16 - 00:21:07:03

Wayne Mulder

And when they talk, when they give ideas, when they show something, when we train, I listen to them. I learn from them because it's not my bailiwick. It's not what I am naturally. It's not my natural environment. But we can all get better and we can get better together. So I want to discuss those real quick. So the other thing I want to talk about is this whole Gazza and flag incident.

00:21:07:03 - 00:21:17:28

Wayne Mulder

You probably saw it all over the Internet this week. Here's kind of what happens here. Watch. This is the interaction between his mom and her and Jayden and then the teacher at the school.

00:21:18:00 - 00:21:48:21

Do they know what the guy is involved in? But it's a historical flag. So they're the reason that they do not want the flag. You do not want the flag is due to its origins with the slavery and slave trade. That is what was the reasoning behind I was not the guy someone then don't tread on me. Okay.

00:21:48:24 - 00:22:09:07

Wayne Mulder

So yeah, the Gadsden flag or the Don't tread on Me flag. If you're not familiar, the yellow one with the snake, it's not racist, period. The only reason that they are trying to make this claim is because they're saying some groups that they deemed to be racist use this flag, which is the most ridiculous thing. Right? I'm sure they use water, too.

00:22:09:07 - 00:22:29:19

Wayne Mulder

Right. So does that make water racist? I mean, don't let them answer that question. These are some people think math is racist, but like Pat Gray at The Blaze actually said, the only tie between the GATS and flag and racism is that they both happen concurrently, which I think is a very good point. The flag obviously came from the American Revolution.

00:22:29:26 - 00:22:44:05

Wayne Mulder

What I love about this story and the reason I want to bring it up is this young man, Jayden was on the Bennie Johnson The Bennie Show, Bennie Johnson Show. And I love his response about standing up to tyranny here. Watch this. What's your advice to them to stand up?

00:22:44:07 - 00:23:21:14

I told them to think about this question. If would you rather live under a tyrannical little or a tyrannical system but maybe lose some friends, get some backlash, maybe get some hate comments, or would you kneel down and just have to live with this tyrannical system? That's what made me that my mom originally said. Then once in trouble and like she said, if you want to take the patch off, that's okay.

00:23:21:16 - 00:23:33:15

And I'm like, No, I do not want to take that patch off, which is like, okay, that's cool too. But yeah, I'm still proudly wearing my Gadsden patch on my back that.

00:23:33:19 - 00:23:55:01

Wayne Mulder

We would be so much better off if adults would answer these questions the way Jaiden did if they would understand in like 2021 have happened in all of the negative effects of 2020. And what we're seeing, again, if we had just a small percentage of adults in this country that acted like jaded, actually willing to stand up to tyranny.

00:23:55:04 - 00:24:22:06

Wayne Mulder

But the reason I brought it up is what I really wanted to talk about in the Glenn Beck had mentioned this a little bit in his monologue the other day, and I wanted to take it a step further. And he was talking about these Revolutionary War symbols that came out, and one of them was the first cartoon, which first printed cartoon and political cartoon, which was the Benjamin Franklin in 1754, the join or die woodcut, which you've probably seen before.

00:24:22:08 - 00:24:47:26

Wayne Mulder

So it was super important. So at the time, Franklin, he was the publisher of the Pennsylvania Gazette, and they were dealing with a combined threat to the British from the French and Indian forces. So during what later became known as the Albany Congress, representatives from seven colonies Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. We're going to meet to discuss the French threat and work on a treaty with the Iroquois Confederacy.

00:24:47:29 - 00:25:08:12

Wayne Mulder

So Franklin was concerned about a recent military loss to the French and was clearly pondering a colonial alliance so that they could better confront this French aggression. So a few days after the small military defeat, Franklin published an article about the loss, as reported by a young major in the Virginia Regiment, someone you've probably heard of George Washington.

00:25:08:14 - 00:25:46:27

Wayne Mulder

He this is what he wrote. The confidence of the French in this undertaking seems well-grounded on the present disunited state of the British colonies and the extreme difficulty of bringing so many different governments and assemblies to agree in any speedy and effectual measures for our common defense and security. They presume that they may, with impunity, violate the most solemn treaties subsisting between the two crown, seize, kill, seize and imprisoned our traitors and confiscate their effects up pleasure as they have done for several years past murder and scalp our farmers with their wives and their children and taken easy possession of such parts of the British territory as they find most convenient for them.

00:25:47:00 - 00:26:16:22

Wayne Mulder

And then it included this join or die cartoon with a snake cut into eight pieces that symbolize the British colonies and the importance of them joining unifying in order to survive. Five in order to push back against this threat. And I was going to have this entire podcast today be on this principle to be about this idea of unifying, to be on this idea of unity, E pluribus unum coming back together.

00:26:16:24 - 00:26:41:07

Wayne Mulder

And then as I spent Saturday responding to some of this absolute insanity on social media, which I get, that's not the real world, it's the social media world. But there are real people behind some of those keyboards. And it really drew home this point. Right. We are at a point I can't speak to everybody, right. I can only speak to you.

00:26:41:10 - 00:27:08:09

Wayne Mulder

And one of the things that I'm often passionate about is that I really believe that you and I can make a difference. That and maybe, maybe, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I've no idea what I'm talking about. Maybe that's foolishness. Right? But I believe that my core that you and I can make a difference. I also believe wholeheartedly that you and I don't have to agree about everything.

00:27:08:12 - 00:27:41:28

Wayne Mulder

We're going to be different right now. There are some things we have to agree on, which is usually when people say some of the topics I get into our political that's the things they're talking about. But there are unifying principles. Declaration of Independence, Right. That would be one of those unifying principles or a collection of unifying principles, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, Principles of American government, principles of capitalism, principles of all these different things that have allowed for the life that we've been able to live.

00:27:42:00 - 00:28:18:17

Wayne Mulder

And I think that sometimes this gets lost and gets forgotten and we're so divided. I speak primarily to law enforcement officers. I comment on something that's primarily about a law enforcement topic. I provide a thought on maybe considering a different set of tactics in a certain scenario. And what I get is a whole bunch of absolute craziness coming back doesn't make me right.

00:28:18:19 - 00:28:46:06

Wayne Mulder

Certainly doesn't make me wrong. There's often two ways to skin a cat, right? Poor cat that got skin. But nonetheless, there's often more than one way to do something correct. That doesn't make me right. But what it does mean is that if we can't even unify on common little things and there's bigger things out there, right, we have a problem.

00:28:46:08 - 00:29:13:15

Wayne Mulder

And it's this disunity, quite frankly, that is our biggest problem. And what it's leading to is more and more and more divisiveness. And that divisiveness is creating a chasm that may never come back together and that will truly be the end of the republic, because we have to unify, we have to find common ground. We have to join or die as that.

00:29:13:17 - 00:29:44:28

Wayne Mulder

As that said, so I think there's been multiple lessons this week, some on the tactical, some on these what Jaiden is doing. But we have to be willing to resist tyranny and we have to learn to join or sadly, we are going to die. So the last thing I want to talk about is Saturday morning, before all the craziness be with this insanity online, I had received multiple text messages that Jimmy Buffett had passed away.

00:29:45:00 - 00:30:04:22

Wayne Mulder

So, you know, Jimmy Buffett was not a great singer. He was not even really a great musician. I can think of many great musicians. I can think of many greats, singers. You know what? You know what Jimmy Buffett was to me? He was a storyteller and he had a way. And he really came from a long line of storytellers.

00:30:04:22 - 00:30:38:17

Wayne Mulder

And some of those early days in the Keys with Jerry Jeff Walker and some of them, they all became great storytellers. A lot of them, you know, Jimmy Buffett kind of created a small world around him, around the whole Margaritaville philosophy, but some of the other ones never did. And many people may not even know who they are, but they're great storytellers and they really tell these great songs that really just kind of put you into whatever world that is, whether it's the West as it is, or some of the country musicians or the world of Margaritaville as it was for Jimmy Buffett.

00:30:38:20 - 00:31:00:08

Wayne Mulder

But I he was probably one of my favorite musicians long ago. Obviously, like everybody. And very much to my point on unity, I don't agree with Jimmy Buffett on politics. I don't agree with him on all sorts of things. I, him and I differ on all sorts of fundamental beliefs, but he made really good music that was very influential to me.

00:31:00:10 - 00:31:20:05

Wayne Mulder

And I had the privilege of seeing him in concert and just just loved his style. I think the reason it kind of hit me a little bit harder is towards the end of my dad's life. My dad passed away a couple of years ago. He very much probably because of me enjoying his music and of course moving to Florida from the frigid north.

00:31:20:05 - 00:31:46:16

Wayne Mulder

Many of the songs were very applicable and I've always loved the beach. I'm not really a Gulf Coast person. I'm much more of a the ocean waves person. But that music of Jimmy Buffett and not so much the ones everybody knows, like Margaritaville and stuff. I've always been a fan of some of his lesser known songs like Last Tango in Paris and some of those, but I really enjoyed kind of just the spirit of the songs that he sang.

00:31:46:18 - 00:32:03:11

Wayne Mulder

And then my dad, as he was getting later in life and before passing away, he was a really big fan of one of the one of his songs as well. I know everybody who sees the set here and knows me personally is like, really the bison guy likes Jimmy Buffett. And I do have one of his books right here.

00:32:03:11 - 00:32:21:09

Wayne Mulder

I actually have all three of his books. But, you know, I think what I like about it kind of like what I alluded to with the country musicians, like Jimmy Buffett has that song where he talks about there's a cowboy in the jungle and he looks so out of place with his shrimp skin, boots and cheap shirts and his skin is white as paste.

00:32:21:11 - 00:32:47:21

Wayne Mulder

And I was like, You know, that kind of how I feel coming from the north to Florida. And but I love the lyrics to his in that song where he says, with no plans for the future, he still seems in control from a Bronco ride to a ten foot tide. He had just had to learn to roll roll with the punches, play all of his hunches, make the best of whatever came his way, what he lacked in ambition.

00:32:47:21 - 00:33:14:21

Wayne Mulder

He made up with intuition, plowing straight ahead, come what may. And I thought those were powerful lyrics, right? I really thought that in some ways that song has been very influential in a lot of things that I've done, including starting this podcast, because sometimes you have to just roll with the punches and you got to make the best of whatever may come, come what may, even when you upset half the Internet on Twitter.

00:33:14:23 - 00:33:36:00

Wayne Mulder

But my dad, as I was alluding to, had a favorite song later on in life. And that's the song I want to leave you part of. Obviously, I can't play the whole song on here. We can only play a short snippet of anything that we put on here, just with the rules and so forth. But this is from a Honolulu, Hawaii 2013 video that I'm going to go to here in a minute.

00:33:36:00 - 00:33:54:28

Wayne Mulder

But let me read these lyrics to you because this was one of my dad's favorite songs later in life. And as I get a little bit older, it definitely has resonated with me. So I hope you enjoy it. The sun's dropping out of the picture soon. Be Time to Move Hasn't been a real big day, but I don't have a thing to prove.

00:33:55:00 - 00:34:22:00

Wayne Mulder

I still got the old nose writer. I still surf old style. I'll go on out beyond the breakers, sit alone and rest awhile. There's nothing that I want to do. No place I'm trying to reach. Only time is now more precious to the oldest surfer on the beach. I start searching for answers. Facts you anyways. Go.

00:34:22:03 - 00:35:13:19

What really matters is that here, when I ask about and the Oh my son is not so I see so why in my life there's nothing wrong. No race outside. Oh yeah. It's to grow this around me.

00:35:13:22 - 00:35:25:19

Wayne Mulder

It's the oldest surfer on the beach like Jimmy Buffett. You will be missed.

00:35:25:22 - 00:36:09:02

Wayne Mulder

Your songs, the lyrics, the stories, they will all be missed. But let's remember, no matter what our differences are, let's remember to unite, to join. That does it for this week's Morning Roll Call. I'll see you next Thursday in the interview room. Next Monday in morning Roll call. But in the meantime, I'll see you out there on the blue line.
